Art at First: Play Reading of “Becoming Calvin”

October 22, 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Art at First will host a community reading of Becoming Calvin by Ann Timmons on Sunday, October 22nd at 2 p.m. in the Mezzanine, followed by a reception and informal discussion.
This play will be read by members of the FPCNYC community, no rehearsal involved!
We’ll be “casting” roles without regard to gender, race or age. Roles range from 17-year-old college students in 16th century Paris to the esteemed German theologian Martin Bucer, to the Queen of France. All roles are open except the lead. Read more about each role in the cast breakdown here!
Interested in reading? Check out the script (available on Amazon.com) and let Ann Timmons (ann@anntimmons.com) know if you’d like to read, and if you have a preferred role.
We hope to have a full house of audience members as well; you can purchase your own copy and follow along!
Becoming Calvin celebrates the Frenchman who was a defining figure of the Protestant Reformation. This compelling two-act drama explores the lives of characters living at the crossroads of history, caught up in the complex relationships between royalty and Rome, leaders of the Church and leaders of state.  The play takes the audience on a journey with one extraordinary young scholar as he realizes his destiny. And it asks us the question: What would you give up for your freedom?
